AJ+ Sculpting Vodou Gods Out Of Skulls and Trash
Internationally exhibited artist André Eugène sculpts Vodou gods out of scrap metal, carved wood, computer gadgets, human bones and refuse. Eugene’s studio, in a downtown Port-au-Prince ghetto, has been described as “the Sistine Chapel of the New World, or at least the late-capitalist, post-industrial proletarian version.” Wow! He is a founding member of the artist collective Atis Rezistans, who make art inspired by Haiti’s revolutionary culture and history. AJ+ asks him what resistance art means to him.
